My favourite shops

Bideford Pottery and Gallery
Situated in Rope Walk, near the post office, the pottery sells beautiful slipware thrown using Bideford’s famous red clay. Sue and her father Harry Juniper make everything themselves, and are extremely knowledgeable about the town’s long potting history.

Bideford Pannier Market
This historical market first opened in 1883, and is well worth a visit. Market days are Tuesdays and Saturdays, 8am–3pm, Jan/Feb/Mar 8am–2pm

Blooms the florist
Glynis is a fabulous florist with a unique style and creative approach. Her shop on the quay has a distinct Continental feel, both in style and flowers, which are both traditional and exotic. Glynis understands her customers, and interprets their needs beautifully. Very reasonable prices.  www.blooms-of-bideford.com

Mill Street Deli
This shop sells a fantastic range of local cheese, cured meats and tracklements. It’s well worth a visit; I use the deli daily. Tell Marion that John sent you! www.millstdeli.com

La Maison, Mill Street
Here you’ll find a fabulous selection of local arts and crafts, great for gifts; very reasonable prices. email interiors@lamaison1.wanadoo.co.uk

Honey’s the butchers, Mill Street
This old-established family shop stocks excellent quality meat. Much of it is reared on their own farm and allowed to hang for full flavour. Be prepared to queue – but it’s worth the wait.

Kellands the greengrocers, Mill Street
Walk in and re-set your clock to 1960! Real old-fashioned customer service with a wide range of local fresh vegetables, salads, herbs and fruit depending on the season. Also great for the more exotic salad leaves too.

Mills Antiques and Interiors, Mill Street
This shop is packed with antiques and fabrics at a reasonable price. Well worth a visit.

My favourite places to go

The Tarka Trail
The Tarka Trail is a well-maintained footpath and cycle path running through North Devon. Join the Tarka Trail at Bideford and rent a bike, or walk to the local beach at Instow or towards the small town of Torrington, where you can enjoy a drink at the Puffing Billy pub.

Victoria Park
A large park with beautiful gardens, two play areas, and a paddling pool with changing rooms and snack bar.

Lundy Island
We are less than a minute’s walk from the Lundy Island booking office and departure/arrival point of the MS Oldenburg. (Lathwells is ideal for dinner when you have had a long day exploring the island – you’ll be feeling hungry!). www.lundyisland.co.uk

RHS Rosemoor
These spectacular gardens are beautiful at any time of year. The kitchen garden is a must-see. www.rhs.org.uk

Somewhere to stay!

Lower Yelland Farm

A Family run, 10 bedroom country house hotel with beautiful gardens and stunning views overlooking the river Torridge. Ideal for exclusive wedding and private parties. www.yeoldonhousehotel.co.uk
